Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks was born February 4, 1913. At the age of 42 on a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger, which the law required of African-Americans at that time. She was arrested for her act of civil disobedience and worked with others from the NAACP to start the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The successful integration of city buses in Montgomery, Alabama, ignited the civil rights movement in the United States and inspired nonviolent movements for social change around the world. - From Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals
